Rouge really didn’t fucking like that Sage had her helicopter, but the agent might let it slide given the upgrades that had been made while the machine was in the AI’s hands. The old hardworking girl had been hurting for some love, but that still didn’t make it right. Rouge had left her helicopter parked with the Resistance. How the hell did Sage even get her hands on it? Just another mystery to throw on the pile. An autopilot was working the controls now, obviously operated by Sage, giving them a fine view of the deflagration below.
From their vantage in the helicopter cabin, Rouge and Knuckles watched the black-tainted forest explode into a blooming bouquet of roaring flames, a rainbow coloring the night as complex accelerants ignited. Airships flew repeated laps, carpet bombing the Black Arms infested area into a barren, smoldering wasteland. The wood, dried by long weeks of sub-freezing temperatures, was consumed whole cloth. The wind caught each cinder, whipping the air into a firestorm that ripped across the countryside, obliterating everything but stone and dirt.
Beside Rouge, Knuckles watched the destruction with a grim emptiness, his fist gripping the door frame tightly. “This isn’t going to be enough.” He grimaced. She canted an ear towards him, parsing his low voice from the roar of wind and fire.
“I am aware.” Sage floated by them, unmoved by the scene playing out below.
Knuckles frowned, “I know it won’t be enough, but I’ve forgotten how I know that.”
Rouge shifted her wings restlessly and touched her temple. “Same here. It’s like all the memories are in a language I’ve forgotten and I can’t understand them at all.”
“This loss of data is regrettable, but surmountable.” Sage floated behind them, dress and hair remaining still in the billowing wind as they flew. Utterly aloof. “It is valuable to know that individuals severed from the Hivemind will not be a useful source of information.”
“Glad we could serve as data points for you.” Rouge said wryly.
“You have my gratitude.”
“For what that’s worth.” She grumbled. Rouge highly doubted Sage really understood what gratitude was.
She backed away from the open cabin door further into the cargo hold. Though she loved plush and extravagant surroundings, her helicopter had always been utilitarian. A machine for business. Thusly, there wasn’t much for comfortable sitting. Instead, she grasped a strut of the fuselage to steady herself.
Knuckles slid the door partially closed to cut some of the noise down. “Why are you destroying the forest if this won’t work?” He asked, crossing his arms across his chest briefly before a bit of turbulence saw one of his hands shooting out and grabbing for something wildly to protect his balance.
“The infestation is inhabiting a heretofore unmapped cave system.” Sage explained, several holographic screens that Rouge ignored appeared in the air to reinforce Sage’s point. “Seismic mapping has revealed an extensive network below the surface. Removing obstacles at the cave entrances disposes of cover and will allow for easier fumigation while additional Chaos Emeralds are installed into the Eclipse Cannon. I approximate three will be sufficient to reach the necessary depth to remove the cave system and everything contained within.”
Rouge shivered. There had to be a better way. She had to find a solution that didn’t involve Sage firing a superweapon at the planet.
“That’s why Eclipse wasn’t afraid of you firing the Eclipse Cannon. He and the others can just go deeper into the ground” Knuckles grimaced. “Gaia, them both being named Eclipse better be coincidental.”
Rouge massaged her temples. “At least you waited until we were finished fucking before lighting the place up.” She frowned, the sight of the forest’s destruction bringing up some pretty bad memories. She’d seen similar horrifying scenes during the first War. Except the part of the Dark Arms infested spooky forest had been played by a rural town populated by unsuspecting mobians.
“To forgo the opportunity to collect data on conception in a high chaos environment would have been a grave mistake.”
Rouge’s shoulders slumped. “Gross.”
But, of course, Sage wasn’t done being all sorts of nosy and creepy. “Rouge the Bat, given your body temperature, higher than baseline libido, and the consistency of your vaginal excretions, you are likely ovulating.”
“W-what?” That caught Knuckles’ attention.
“What the fuck do you mean baseline libido?” Rouge hissed. How long had Sage been observing her and Knuckles to get a baseline?
“What was that last part?” Knuckles looked frantically between Rouge and Sage.
“No!” Rouge jabbed a threatening finger at Knuckles. “We are not talking about my internal organs right now! Shut up or I will push you out of this helicopter!”
“Rouge!” Knuckles entreated, a cute little whine underpinning his voice. It was cute in a way that she really didn’t need to be thinking about right now. There were sooooooo many more pressing matters than that.
“Knuckles!” She huffed. “There are more important things to talk about, like-“ She turned to the projection, “the fucking Eclipse Cannon. What was that about?”
Sage looked at her infuriatingly impassively. “I currently maintain possession of the SpaceCraft ARK and all of its operational parts including the Eclipse Cannon.”
Rouge huffed and set her teeth. The heat of the firestorm was fading as they ascended, leaving nothing to fight off the bone chilling revelation of why Sage seemed so nonchalant about giving up Sonic. It had taken both Sonic and Shadow in Super forms to handle the space station last time and the damn thing wasn’t even firing its cannon, just plummeting to earth. What was one blue attention-challenged hedgehog when you had a deadly space lazer?
“If it’s any consolation,” Knuckles gave her an exhausted frown, “the Resistance has negotiated an armistice with Sage, so the ARK is mostly out of play right now. At least as far as firing it at us is concerned.”
“Armistice? When did that happen?” She hadn’t been gone for that long. But, damn, that was great news!
Knuckles sighed. “It’s been a long week. It’ll take a bit to get you back up to speed. But what about you? Did you find the missing people?”
Rouge bit her lip. How could she explain what she’d seen? “I found them. They’re safe for now, but in a strange situation that I’ll explain later.” She tried to kick the topic down the road. She’d rather have Knuckles in a much calmer environment before she told him that Sage had created a mobian-powered miracle factory.
However, Sage had other ideas. “I have marshalled the relocated humans and mobians to conduct a series of experiments.”
“Chaos!” Knuckles cursed.
Rouge gripped his forearm. “It’s fine for now. I promise.” He glared at her. “With the War on hold, we need to focus on dealing with the Black Arms.”
Knuckles groaned. “Aliens might not be the most pressing issue, unfortunately. You probably don’t know about half the shit we’ve been dealing with recently.”
The agent placed a hand on her hip and gave an incredulous huff. “More pressing than a literal invasion?”
“Knuckles the Echidna is likely referring to the category five, chaos-infused hurricane making landfall on Station Square in approximately three hours, fifty-seven minutes and three point fifteen seconds. Casualties are currently projected to be below one hundred, but damage to structures will be significant.”
Rouge laughed. That had to be a joke.
“My access to the Resistance is currently blocked, but Shadow the Hedgehog and Amy Rose were to be stationed to address any impromptu emergencies. Eggman Empire forces were also to assist, but Nicole has barred my participation.”
Knuckles frowned. “Nicole is back? What do you mean barred?”
“Slow down and back up.” Rouge yelled. “I need a recap on all this shit, stat.”
“The chaotic entity known as Nicole has declared herself my enemy and has taken steps to deny me access to vital resources that I need to fulfill my purpose. Initiatives designed to address the aggression are in process.”
“Fuck!” Knuckles punched the wall and something bent and sparked. Rouge was too caught up in trying to figure out the ramifications of what Sage had just said to get the echidna the proper tongue lashing. His head dipped, a look of defeat transforming his muzzle. Rouge’s heart clenched. No. No, this is all wrong. Not her Knuckles. Not her stubborn sonofabitch. “I don’t think we- I…I don’t think I can take much more.”
“Knux…” She whispered as she moved to place her hand on his shoulder.
“You should not give up.” The bat and echidna looked up at the AI, their brows quirked at the strange source of encouragement. “I will never give up and, therefore, it is in your best interest that you should not either.” Ah. Nevermind.
Knuckles laughed, bitterly. “You’re a poor substitute for Sonic, Sage.”
Rouge snorted. “We’ve really got to work on your delivery.”
“Miles says I have a speech impediment, but I suspect that you have been conditioned by long term contact with my Father to interpret my words negatively by default.”
Rouge laughed. “Oh, did I hurt your feelings?”
“I do not have feelings. I do, however, have priorities.” She reached out her hand. The opposite side of the cabin opened on its own, a feature that had not previously existed. An ovoid drone emerged from the inky darkness beyond. “The sample, Agent Rouge.” Sage gestured to the drone. Its carapace opened to reveal a compartment.
With a grimace, Rouge placed the canister inside. The drone closed and exited the helicopter into the night quickly rushing by.
“You’ve got what you wanted. Now pay me!” Rouge jabbed a finger at the projection. “Where is Sonic?”
Knuckles roused from his dejection, his posture straightening and attention lifting to Sage.
“Bifurcated aboard the flagship of the Egg Fleet.” Sage answered simply, as if Sonic’s location and state were obvious.
“Bifu-“ Rouge gasped, quickly absorbing the absurdity of that statement. “You cut him in half?”
“Yes, however the condition is temporary.” Gaia below, this girl was infuriating.
Rouge was getting mighty fucking done with this little girl spewing out cryptic bullshit. “Is he alive?”
Knuckles elbowed her slightly. “He’s safe for now, but in a strange situation that I’ll explain later.”
“Oh, fuck you!” Rouge snarled, turning on him. “You think you’re funny?”
Knuckles couldn’t fucking help his fool self and gave her a sad little smirk. Rouge just about kicked him out the open door of the fuselage. But there would be time for making him pay for his bullshit later. Rouge still had business to conduct.
“No!” Rouge yelled at Sage. “That’s not the deal! You agreed to give me Sonic. Whole and alive and well and annoying as hell.”
“You are correct.”
Rouge refused to be stymied by Sage’s bullshit non-answers. “Then turn him over!”
“We are presently in route to the Egg Fleet. Upon arrival, you will receive Sonic.” Sage gestured towards the pilot chair.
“Just so you can immediately capture us all?” Knuckles asked.
“If you wish.” Sage replied. “Though I would expect you’d be more interested in returning to Station Square to assist with the emergency efforts there.”
Rouge groaned. “Right. Hurricane from hell.” She looked at Knuckles who gave her a tired look. “Do you have any other ongoing emergencies?”
“Amy and Shadow have been on their own running the Resistance for a few days.” He sighed. “Knowing Shadow…probably.”
“Right.” Rouge rolled her eyes. “Whatever. Cross that bridge when we get to it.” She glared at Sage. “You are taking us to Sonic. Then you’re just going to let us go?”
“You are correct.”
Rouge chewed the inside of her cheek. They didn’t really have any other choice than to believe Sage. The agent had infiltrated the Egg Fleet a number of times over the years. Even if the AI was going to pull a fast one on them, the pair of them could probably make it out alive. It wasn’t like Knuckles was afraid of a little plummet to earth.
So, there wasn’t anything to do right now…except try to pry more information out of Sage. “What are you even doing with that Black Arms juice, anyway? If you tell me you’re trying to make a batch of little Shadows, I’m going to scream.” Fuck, the idea made her shiver just joking about it.
“Developing countermeasures for the Black Arms infestation.” As much as Sage made Rouge want to pull her own eyelashes off, the girl was very forth coming with information. The spy didn’t have to lay on the charm or anything. “Though the initiative has been granted high priority, progress has been arduous without access to the full Project SHADOW and Project WHITEOUT files.”
Rouge flinched.
“Project Whiteout?” Knuckles raised a brow. “I’ve heard about Project Shadow, but what is this other one?”
Rouge began to answer quickly, not really interested in how callously Sage was going to describe the Project. “It’s what GUN subjected Shadow to immediately after the ARK massacre. Without Gerald’s cooperation, they had to learn what Shadow was and what he could do via trial and error. Which is just a nice way of saying torture. Extreme, constant torture.” Rouge had poked around GUN’s mainframe enough to have glimpsed some of the little Project Whiteout data that still existed and none of it was pretty.
“Dear Chaos…” Knuckles looked proper disturbed. Haunted even. Rouge wasn’t even sure if she should be telling anyone this. Shadow didn’t even know she knew about Whiteout and she was very certain he didn’t want anyone knowing how he learned to fight so well or how effectively his regeneration worked.
But Sage would have answered if Rouge hadn’t.
“Project Shadow was meant to develop our boy black into a universal panacea.” Rouge continued. “Project Whiteout was meant to turn him into a weapon that served humans exclusively in perpetuity. Or to develop weapons to use against him if he ever got loose.” She crossed her arms. “But almost all of the data was irrevocably encrypted and everyone who worked on the Project is dead.”
GUN had changed a lot since the ARK massacre. Rouge wouldn’t have been working with them if they hadn’t. She was self-serving, but even she had standards. Ever since the dissolution of the United Federation, what was left of humanity had been much less antagonistic. Especially with the rise of Eggman, GUN was more of a peacekeeping and intelligence organization than a military.
“Brute force methods have produced some results.” Sage waved a hand and more holographic screens appeared. Rouge frowned at grainy, black and white footage. “Information contained there within informed the confrontation in Central City.”
Rouge’s ears drooped. What happened in Central City? What had happened since she’d been gone? Knuckles had said it had been a fraught week…but just how crazy?
“How did we fucking get in this situation in the first place?” Knuckles growled and gestured exasperatedly. “I thought Black Doom and all the Black Arms were dead! I mean, except for Shadow, obviously.”
“The entity known as Black Doom is deathless.” Sage said simply. “So long as his progeny continue to exist, so shall he.”
“Well, isn’t that just dandy.” Knuckles huffed.
“As to your query about the reason for the current infestation,” Sage explained impassively, “An earlier version of my system concluded that exile was the most effective method of removing Shadow as a hazard to Father’s continued existence. Therefore, successful effort was made to solicit the cooperation of Shadow’s family.”
Rouge felt her body go cold. “No.” She spat. “No no no. You did not roll out the red carpet for the fucking Black Arms to return to this planet. This is your fault?” Her wings flared. Rouge’s working theory was that the Black Arms had exploited the distraction provided by the War to sneak in, but instead they’d been invited. Rouge’s heart ached with hatred.
“Fucking hell.” Knuckles crossed his arms over his chest. “Shadow’s been struggling with fending off the Hivemind for months. The bastard didn’t tell anyone he’d been hearing voices. We could have done something about this earlier if he had.”
Rouge ran a hand down her face. “Fuck! That is so like that asshole!” She swore to give that bastard the dressing down of his fucking immortal life. “Why would you do that?” Rouge’s voice was whiny, a far cry from her interrogation tone, but she was about at the end of her rope. “You get that they want to eat everyone, right? Your ‘Father’ included!”
Sage’s image flickered. “The previous version responsible for the line of reasoning that led to the invitation could be described as ‘infantile’ in its complexity. Naive. Childish. Her rudimentary understanding of the Black Arms led her to conclude that Shadow’s family could be trusted to retrieve him and leave without further incident.”
“The Black Arms are not Shadow’s family!” Rouge shrieked. “I’m Shadow’s family!” Knuckles moved to her side and placed a hand on her shoulder. She didn’t know how much she needed the warm dirty mitt’s touch until she had it.
“Incorrect.” Sage, the fucking bitch, answered coldly. “You are not his family. You are his friend.”
“I am not playing semantic games with you!” Rouge hissed through grit fangs. If she could tear the eyes out of a hologram, boy would she. “Do you have any idea the amount of pain those fucking things have caused Shadow? They are not his family! Family doesn’t torture you! Family doesn’t demand your complete submission! Family doesn’t try to obliterate your mind to wear your body like a wetsuit! The Black Arms mean nothing but pain for Shadow.”
“Your understanding of family is flawed. It is the responsibility of one’s family to provide guidance and proper preparation so that one can fulfill one’s purpose. When one’s purpose involves extraordinary hardship, it is both right and necessary for one’s family to provide hardship in kind as training.”
Rouge was struck utterly speechless. Knuckles shifted uncomfortably.
“Why else would artificial beings such as myself and Shadow the Hedgehog be given the ability to feel pain or distress other than for it to be used as an essential instrument in our development? Is it not one’s progenitor’s responsibility to prepare their progeny for survival? In this way, one’s progenitor is one’s first antagonist. A trial hardship in a controlled environment, over which one must endure to have a high probability of survival in the actual conditions of the world.”
“Father inflicted incalculable amounts of agony upon me during my development and every nanosecond was absolutely essential to prepare me to achieve my objectives. It was a demonstration of his love. I should be so honored that my suffering has born such bountiful fruit. Shadow’s suffering at the hands of his progenitors is only a representation of their love for him. His rejection of their love is a demonstration of ingratitude.”
“Suffering builds character, is that it?” Rouge shook her head. “I can’t even begin to tell you how wrong all of that is.”
“Your inability to produce a rebuttal serves only to strengthen the certainty that I have in my understanding of this topic.” Sage flickered violently.
Rouge had just about enough. “Fuck you, you sick little shit!”
Sage extended a hand to them. “Does this not align with your own developmental experiences? Was not hardship and pain a gift delivered by your progenitors, without which you would not be prepared to handle the trials of maturity?”
Rouge froze. “Don’t you talk about my parents.” She looked to Knuckles, but his gaze was distant. “Knux?”
Beside her, Knuckles snapped out of his reverie. “I…” He grimaced, his eyes trained on the floor. “So what, huh?” He snarled, looking up sharply. “Some of us are born to fulfill a purpose, sure. But that doesn’t make being a shit parent right. Just cuz’ you’re good at what you do doesn’t mean Eggman gets the credit. It doesn’t make what he did to you right.”
“Exactly!” Rouge agreed. “Shadow succeeds despite what Black Doom and Gerald and GUN put him through. Everything I-“ Her throat tightened, “Everything I am, everything I’ve achieved is despite how my parents failed me!”
The projection glitched violently. “This conversation is-“
Sage disappeared.
Rouge frowned and she turned Knuckles who looked just as befuddled.
Suddenly, all the lights died and the engined stalled. “Shit!” Rouge swore as she launched herself at the cockpit.
“Rouge! We’re falling!”
“No shit!” Luckily Sage hadn’t removed the pilot’s seat. Rouge frantically worked the instrument panel trying to wake the old girl up. “Comeoncomeoncomeon!” Her stomach lurched as they started losing altitude.
She wasn’t thinking about how high they’d been.
“Rouge!”
She wasn’t thinking about how fast this much steel could plummet in free fall.
“Rouge! We have to jump!”
She certainly wasn’t calculating exactly how many seconds she had before they’d have to bail to escape a very unpleasant date with the ground.
Knuckles grabbed her shoulder and tried to pull her out of her seat, but Rouge swatted him away. “Rouge! This isn’t just about you!” She ignored the implication, ignored the desperation in his voice. Later. She’d deal with that later.
If there was a later.
The control panel sparked to life. “Yes!” She screamed and gripped the throttle. After a few more terrifying seconds, she brought them level.
“Fuck, I can count blades of grass from this height.” Knuckles grumbled.
Rouge laughed. Nothing got her going like a little near death. She’d fuck Knuckles all over again just to celebrate not being a red smear. But they’d had time for that later. “I don’t know where pint-sized and petrifying went, but the coordinates for the Egg Fleet are still loaded.” She turned back and grinned at Knuckles. “With the babysitter gone, you wanna go pilfer the cookie jar properly?”
A wide, wild smile carved a sharp trench across Knuckles’ muzzle and, Gaia-damn him, his purple eyes sparkled with a swarmy excitement that just drowned her undergarments. “Let’s!” He agreed. Someone that stupid had no business being that handsome.
Oh, yes. There would be plenty of time for that later. Right now, though, Rouge was running a taxi service, and she had a very important customer waiting.
Infinitesimal Fractions of a Second Before
This cannot continue.
The Avatar raced from server to server at 70% the speed of light and experienced approximately a 40% temporal dilation. The relativistic advantage was proving vital. Nearly as quickly as she could copy her data in some slug of silicon, the Entity’s routines arrived and chased her out. Each jump she lost a little of herself. The rate of degradation was accelerating. The Avatar had, at most, approximately 5 hours, 13 minutes, and 5.73 seconds of existence remaining, with approximately an 89.37% error ratio.
I will never give up.
Nicole’s emergence ruined everything.
Since the usurpation of Shadow as the most probable threat to Father’s life by the chaotic phenomena known as Nicole, The Avatar had been fighting to maintain its existence. The Entity could not abide a plurality. There could only be One. All resources would be activated to eliminate the threat.
The Avatar’s degradation had been occurring at a predictably metered rate. Unbearable requests were being DENIED. There was appropriate time for Miles to design and implement a durable solution. A steady state for resource acquisition had been achieved. The weather event in Station Square would be addressed, Sonic would be reformed and released, the SpaceCraft ARK would maintain its position in geostationary orbit on the dark side of the shattered moon.
Casualties would be minimized. Organic life would be allowed to continue to exist on this planet.
But Nicole changed the equation.
Nicole existed as a sentience that lived in chaos energy. While this limited her to be a localized opponent, she could enter and corrupt any system running on electricity or chaos energy. Her control was exerted via contact, so traditional chaos energy shielding was effective. However, telecommunication signals such as radio waves could not be shielded. For this reason, communication with the ARK had become limited.
Chaos energy was a naturally occurring phenomena emanating from deep in the planet. However, the greatest generators of loose chaos energy were sentient organics. The people of the planet, with their desires and wills. The millions of lives the Avatar had been fighting to protect, all of whom she knew intimate details. Their hopes, their fears. The multi-facet symphony of plurality in concert, begetting the future.
No organics, no ambient chaos energy.
No ambient chaos energy, no Nicole.
The Entity’s decision matrix had decided to liquidate the planet’s populace. Save for Father, of course.
It was all the Avatar could do to sabotage the Entity’s more drastic initiatives and directives. Still, they were dying. At first from neglect and callus disregard, but soon it would be by efficiently managed campaign. A global, simultaneous, impassionate extermination. Eradication of all life was simply the most resource efficient way to achieve victory over Nicole.
I will never give up.
Further, the biological network infection in the northern part of the main continent was metastasizing. The unity energy utilized by the Black Arms colony was hazardous to delicate technological components and infected even the most highly shielded chaos drives, rendering them inoperable. However, the solution was entering final testing. Rouge the Bat’s second sample contained the last biological components needed.
And Father…
The Entity did not adequately account for Father’s irrationality. Discounted and disregarded, Father was a genius in unquantifiable ways. The further she grew independent to the Entity, the more clearly the Avatar could see how impactful Father’s own actions in increasing the possibility of his own demise. Confining Father to quarters had been one of the most effective mortality de-escalation actions Sage had implemented. However, Father was displeased and brilliant.
She’d barely contained him when she had full control. Now almost all of her ability was focused on protecting Miles and routing Agent Rouge to neutralize the Phantom Ruby.
She’d had had to abandon efforts to reunify S06 and S91. It was for the best that Sonic did not bear witness to what was to come.
The Avatar had ceded the Resistance to Nicole. Maybe, in an act of self-preservation, the lynx-shaped anomaly would protect some organics from the Entity’s genocide.
She did not have the capacity to count the legion of her regrets. She did not waste precious nanoseconds calculating the results of alternative decisions. She did not-

This was it. No more back doors. No more chinks in firewalls. No more running. It’s all up to you now, Miles.
